A (better) definition of life

The one and only thing that a living thing can do, that a machine/robot can not, is feel.

A machine’s motivation is an algorithm. A living organisms motivation is it’s feeling. The more complex the organism, the more complex and diverse the feelings involved.

One of the greatest mysteries of the universe is ‘how innate matter could gain such an ability?’

Are you saying that algae can ‘feel’?
– It seems more obvious that higher order, sentient, organisms have this ability than do trees/algae. But, perhaps they do and we just do not know it. One thing that is for certain, is that this ability is not innate to matter itself, but is somehow added on. And that only living things have it.
